With the advent of new technology, the changes in society and how people as a whole think and act, it's important to know which jobs and industries are up and coming for the 21st century.

Healthcare Industry - just about any job in the healthcare industry is going to be good and get better. The pay is above average and the employment opportunities almost endless. Take into account the federal government's desire to see healthcare expanded and you have the perfect storm.

Financial Service Sector - with the emergence of new types of financial instruments, it is harder and harder for joe sixpack to know what or how to invest his money. Expect to be required to have a college degree and most likely a masters as well as many various licenses to be successful in this field.

Robot Technician - robot technician? What in the world is that? This is a major wave of the future with so many things being automated. Some computer savvy as well as an ability to work with tools and electronics are mainstays for this specialized position. College may not be required but a good vocational school should be in your sites if you are thinking along these lines.

Fiber Optic Technician - another highly specialized field that has been up and coming for some time now. Fiber optics are used in communication and the level of efficiency it operates under has now made it the only way to transmit data. It's much more complex than cable or electrical wiring and will require some specialized training.

State and Local Government - the federal government is slowly passing off some of the responsibilities and services to the local and state governments as well as outsourcing to private firms. Expect a steady up tick in the available jobs in almost every area on the local and state levels. Although the pay is generally a little lower than a private position, the benefits are outstanding. The amount of education will vary but expect at the very minimum a high school education.
